Requiem Events

Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina will be exhibited in Ironworld's Overlook Gallery January 26 through April 20, 2008. The following special programs and events are offered in conjunction with the exhibit.

January 26, 2:00 p.m. Lecture:
From Prairies and Pines to Paddies: Minnesotans and the Vietnam War
By Steve Potts, Hibbing Community College History and Political Science instructor
Steve Potts offers an overview of Minnesotans' role in the Vietnam War and the war's impact, then and now, on our state.

3:00 p.m. Film:
Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam
Letters to and from American participants of the Vietnam War are heard over images culled from news footage, home movies and still photography, with contemporary music added to put things in the proper historical context.

February 21, 7:00 p.m. Film:
The XY Factor: Sex in the Vietnam War
The XY Factor travels from college campus protests to the bordellos of Southeast Asia to tell the multi-faceted story of the war and its relations to the Sexual Revolution.

February 24, 2-4 p.m.
Visit with the Vets Clinic
Representatives from the local veterans Affairs clinic will be available to talk with visitors about services available at the clinic, the reality of post-traumatic stress disorder and how community members can aid in the healing process for Vietnam veterans and others returning from combat situations.

March 1 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Memoir Writing Workshop
($25 class fee; limit of 10 participants)
In this introductory workshop, participants will read various short memoirs related to war and then begin to write their own recollections' whether from the battle field or the home front'through a series of different writing exercises.

March 2, 2:00 p.m. Film:
Regret to Inform
This documentary by photographer Barbara Sonneborn was prompted by the death of her husband in Vietnam. It focuses on the losses and agonies endured by women on both sides of America's military campaign in Southeast Asia.

March 6, 13, 20, 7:00 Film:
American Photography: A Century of Images
This three part series traces the profound effect photographs have had on American life in how it both documented change and created it. The Developing Image, 1900-1934; The Photographic Age, 1935-1959; and Photography Transformed, 1960-1999.

Battle Notes: Music of the Vietnam War by Lee Andresen
History and Political Science instructor at Lake Superior College, Lee Andresen began using music to bring history alive for the students in his class 'Vietnam, America's Longest War.' This work evolved into the book Battle Notes. Book signing to follow presentation.
